Flash photography isn't difficult. A few simple guidelines will enable photographers to take good photographs, even with pop-up flashes. The information here applies to all brands of cameras and flashes: Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus etc.

Internal Pop-up Flash

The built-in pop-up flashes in digital SLRs have a bad reputation because they are "direct" flashes that create harsh, ugly shadows.

Softer shadows are more pleasing for portrait photographs of people (weddings). Soft, diffused light is obtained by placing a diffuser over the flash. This also avoids the notorious red-eye effect. Commercial diffusers are available, but a white sheet of paper works just as well (see "flash diffuser" link below).
