Of all the components inside or connected to a computer, the screen is usually one of the more expensive items. The price of a desktop monitor increases with the size and resolution of the panel (the resolution roughly translates into how clear and sharp the picture is, with higher being better). The overall price of a laptop also increases depending on the screen. Unfortunately, damage to a monitor or screen can be quite serious.

Identifying a Broken Screen

If a user has taken some basic troubleshooting steps, they will have found that the machine itself appears to be working, i.e. the hard drive light is flashing, the sound of the drive spinning up is normal, but the screen is blank. The most important thing to establish at this point is that the panel itself is working.

The panel refers to the physical area that displays a picture. This panel sits inside the monitor case (or laptop lid) and is connected through the VGA cable to the computer tower, or through a much smaller cable that runs through a laptop's hinge. In either case, the panels are essentially the same.
