Flash Stand Alone

The extraordinarily popular Brazilian writer concerns himself in, The Winner Stands Alone, with questions of ethics and ways of living. What better place to set his novel than at Cannes during the film festival. The characters Coelho has created bristle with ambition and discombobulated psyches. The powerful, the corrupt and the naïve all battle the uncertainties of their chosen paths.

Igor Will Kill for Love

Into the glitzy artificial world of the Cannes Film Festival, with its luxury hotel suites and yacht filled harbor, endless parties and crowds of hopeful wanderers on La Croisette, comes Igor, a Russian magnate, intent on recapturing his ex-wife, Ewa. Now married to the enormously successful fashion designer, Hamid Hussein, from Dubai, she dodges her fate until the last moment. Igor, driven by what to him is a completely rational passion for Ewa, uses random homicide to demonstrate the lengths he will go for his love.

The only character in the book with redeeming virtue is Jasmine, a black Belgian model who manages to escape the allure of promotion to super-model as the face of the House of Hussein. Her choice is contrasted to that of Gabriela, who is plucked from obscurity to appear opposite a dimming star in what is to be Hussein’s initial venture in the film industry.

Jasmine’s fortitude is rare among those who achieve success in the fashion and film industries. She understands the ephemeral nature of fame and chooses instead to make up for a past transgression by following her the best instincts of her heart. She knows that fame promises much and delivers little.

People are Never Satisfied

Early on, Coelho begins a chapter with the statement "People are never satisfied". This is the natural foundation for the alluring convergence of money, power and fame at the Cannes Film Festival. His is a tale of blind ambition, shady dealings and seduction into the world of excess and luxury.

The Festival is pictured as a boiler room of precisely choreographed activity. The red carpet events, photo ops, sleazy deal-making and meticulously staged entrances to receptions are described in detail as is the cruel treatment of those on the way up and those on the way down.
